Embracing the Power of Purpose

 – from Despair to Being fully alive.

Life has an extraordinary way of transforming our paths, leading us from the depths of despair to the heights of self-discovery. I am a Performance coach, psychotherapist & hypnotherapist but I’m also someone who, like many of us, has walked the dark corridors of despair and emerged into the radiant sunlight of purpose.

My journey …….into the realm of purpose began forty years ago with a profound question echoing in the aftermath of a suicide attempt: “Why have I survived? There must be a reason.” At that moment. I experienced a yearning, a yearning to understand the purpose behind my continued presence on this earth.

The inner sense of purpose is a journey that connects our souls to the tapestry of life. It requires introspection, meditation, and a willingness to listen to the whispers of our inner selves. As a certain person named Oprah once said, “Life always whispers to you first, but if you ignore the whisper, sooner or later you’ll get a scream.”

For this journey, we may benefit from the help of others to help us dig deep and transform. In my case, this meant seeking the help of a skilled psychotherapist who helped me follow a process to peel away layers of pain and confusion to uncover the core of my being.

Pragmatic Approach:

On the other hand, the pragmatic “Take these Steps” approach which I mentioned last week, involves a more tangible, action-oriented pursuit of purpose. It’s about taking deliberate steps towards a meaningful life. This approach acknowledges that purpose is not a mystical revelation bestowed upon us; rather it’s a journey that requires effort, dedication, and a willingness to embrace the challenges along the way.

But does it have to be one or the other? My personal journey was and is a fusion of both these approaches. The spiritual exploration allowed me to understand the deeper layers of my existence, while the pragmatic steps empowered me to translate that understanding into concrete actions. I discovered a passion for working with people to help them be the best they can be.

Whether you view purpose as a spiritual essence or something you discover within yourself, it isn’t about seeking a destination, but is a continual unfolding of self-awareness and connection to something more important than ourselves.

The power of purpose is a force that transcends the boundaries of our individual lives, connecting us to the vast tapestry of humanity. For many, the journey towards purpose is a transformative odyssey that turns darkness into light, despair into hope.

Whatever you decide, the answer is not “Out there” it’s inside you. Your task is to connect with it.
